Remote admin
Virtual assistant, hired by you
Diary, inbox, invoices, travel, and the spreadsheet a busy person will not open. You work for two or three clients directly. You are not buying a seat in someone else’s agency.

- Where
- Remote, for clients in a time zone you can overlap for at least two hours. Local businesses are an easier first sale than a stranger on another continent.
- Hours
- Clients want a predictable block — Tuesday and Thursday mornings, for example. Purely evenings is possible for inbox tidy and less so for phone calls. Agree the block in writing.
- Pay
- Direct clients often pay $20–40 or £16–30 an hour for solid admin. Specialist support can be more.
- To start
- A computer you have, a professional email address, and a sample of how you would tidy a messy inbox (use fake data). No certification product is required.
Why it is listed
Admin is real work businesses pay for. Doing it directly keeps the fee that an agency would take, without pretending it is passive.
What you can realistically expect
The first client is usually a person who is already overwhelmed and already knows you. Agencies that “place” you and keep half exist; you can skip them and still do the work.
Who pays you
The client pays a weekly or monthly invoice. A retained few hours, paid at the start of the month, is cleaner than chasing a timesheet. You do not pay them.
How to start
- Write a one-page offer: three services, the hours, the price, what you will not touch (their passwords in a chat app, their bank).
- Ask two self-employed people who complain about admin.
- Do a paid two-hour trial on a boring task.
- Use a password manager they control. You should be removable in an afternoon.
Finding the first customers
- A consultant, a therapist, or a tradesperson who is booked up and answering email at night.
- A small charity’s volunteer coordinator, if they have a budget line.
- One client who will introduce you, after a month that went well.
What to charge
Sell a block of hours, not an open-ended “I’ll just help”. Unused hours can expire at the end of the month. Say that at the start so nobody is surprised.
Tax and paperwork
Keep a note of every payment and every cost from the first job. In the UK this is usually self-employment; tell HMRC when your income reaches the point they set. In the US it is often self-employment tax, sometimes with quarterly estimates. Other countries have their own registration. This is not tax advice — an hour with an accountant beats any course.
Read this before you start
- Any “VA job” that asks you to pay for training, equipment shipping, or a background check on a personal link is a scam.
- Do not receive your client’s customer payments into your own account.
- Jobs that are mostly posting fake engagement are not assistant work.

Write for local businesses
Write the pages, menus, emails, and listings a nearby business keeps meaning to finish. You are selling a finished page, not “content”. Local beats a race to the bottom on a global board.
A simple page is often $80–250 or £70–200. An ongoing blog is a separate, usually worse, deal.

Keep the books for a sole trader
Reconcile a month of transactions for a plumber, a tutor, or a market stall — someone whose books are a shoebox. You need to be accurate. You do not need to be their accountant.
