Walk dogs in your own neighbourhood

Walk the same few dogs every week for people who live near you. You keep the whole fee. You also keep the responsibility if a dog slips a lead.

Where
In your own town — London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow, Cardiff, Dublin, Toronto, Vancouver, Sydney, Melbourne, New York, Chicago, and smaller places. You do not need a platform.
Hours
A walk is 30–60 minutes plus the doorstep chat. Lunchtime slots suit a day nearby. Group walks pay better and need more skill — do solo walks first.
Pay
Many walkers charge about $15–25 or £12–20 for half an hour, before travel
To start
A spare lead and bags. Insurance is the cost worth taking seriously once you have more than one client. Keys should be coded, not labelled with an address.

Why it is listed

Owners understand exactly what they are buying. You do not need Rover’s fee if you can find the dogs yourself. The apps are on this site too, if you would rather they find you.

What you can realistically expect

Five regular dogs is a strong side income and also a schedule you must keep when it rains. Holiday cover is the awkward part — agree it before you take the key.

Who pays you

The owner pays you weekly or monthly by transfer. A trial walk can be paid the same day. Cash is fine when you know them. Strangers and cash and “I’ll pay next time” is how invoices die.

How to start

  1. Decide the streets you will actually cover.
  2. Tell neighbours and the local vet’s noticeboard, if they have one.
  3. Meet the dog with the owner there. Walk a trial.
  4. Write down the vet’s number, the door code, and who to call.

Finding the first customers

  • People in your building who already stop you to chat about their dog.
  • A vet, groomer, or shelter board — ask before you pin anything.
  • One owner who then introduces you. Dogs come in clusters.

What to charge

Price the walk, not the friendship. Include a second dog from the same house at a discount you choose, not for free. Holiday and puppy rates can be higher. Say so on a one-page note.

Tax and paperwork

Keep a note of every payment and every cost from the first job. In the UK this is usually self-employment; tell HMRC when your income reaches the point they set. In the US it is often self-employment tax, sometimes with quarterly estimates. Other countries have their own registration. This is not tax advice — an hour with an accountant beats any course. Public liability insurance is ordinary for this work. Get it from an insurer, not from a social-media comment.

Read this before you start

  • Do not buy a “pet-care territory”.
  • Off-lead because the owner said “he’s friendly” is how people get hurt. Your rule can be stricter.
  • If you are handed a key on day one by someone who will not meet you, decline.
