Declutter for cash

Sell what you already own

Turn a spare room into cash without becoming a reseller. Clothes, the pushchair, the drill you used twice, the textbooks. It is the side hustle with the least fiction attached.

Where
In your own town — London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow, Cardiff, Dublin, Toronto, Vancouver, Sydney, Melbourne, New York, Chicago, and smaller places. You do not need a platform. Local collection avoids postage. Apps such as Vinted, eBay, or Facebook Marketplace are tools, not employers.
Hours
One evening to photograph, one to pack or meet. Then it goes quiet, which is the point. Buying stock to “do this properly” is how people lose the cash they just made.
Pay
Whatever your things are worth, minus fees and postage. A clear-out of a few hundred is a success.
To start
No stock cost if the items are yours. Fees depend on the app. A tape measure and daylight are the tools.

Why it is listed

It is legal, immediate, and does not require an audience. We would rather you do this than buy a course about retail arbitrage.

What you can realistically expect

Most household things are worth less than you remember. Price to sell. The win is the money and the space, not a new identity as an entrepreneur.

Who pays you

The buyer pays through the app, or in person when they collect and have seen the item. Do not accept a payment that is larger than the price. Do not ship before an in-app sale exists.

How to start

  1. Make a pile of ten things you can stand to see go.
  2. Look up what they actually sold for, not the new price.
  3. Photograph defects. They will be found anyway.
  4. Prefer collection in a public place, in daylight, for local sales.

Finding the first customers

  • You do not need customers you know. You need a clear photo and a price near the last sold listing.
  • Friends can have first look for bulky items if you want them gone this weekend.
  • A car-boot or yard sale is still a valid shop, for one Saturday.

What to charge

Search sold prices. If nothing sold near your number, your number is a wish. Postage is either in the price or shown exactly — surprise postage kills the sale and your rating.

Tax and paperwork

Selling your own used goods is usually not a business. If you start buying stock to resell, it is, and the tax note applies. Keep a note of every payment and every cost from the first job. In the UK this is usually self-employment; tell HMRC when your income reaches the point they set. In the US it is often self-employment tax, sometimes with quarterly estimates. Other countries have their own registration. This is not tax advice — an hour with an accountant beats any course.

Read this before you start

  • Overpayment messages and fake courier links are the entire scam industry around online selling.
  • Do not meet at your home if the item is small enough to meet elsewhere.
  • Counterfeit and recalled goods are not “a find”.
