Freelance marketplace
Upwork
Offer a skill you can already prove — writing, design, bookkeeping, development, or admin — to clients on a long-running freelance marketplace. Opening a profile is free.

Checked 22 September 2026. Figures are ranges, not offers.
- Where
- From home, in countries the company actually pays. Eligibility is their rule, not ours — confirm payout before you count on the money.
- Hours
- You pick the contracts. A small retainer can be five hours a week. The first month is often quiet, so do not leave a job because one client messaged you.
- Pay
- General work often starts around $15–40 an hour before fees
- To start
- No fee to open a profile. Upwork takes a service fee from earnings. That percentage has changed before — read the current figure on Upwork’s own pricing page and put it in your rate.
Why it is listed
You can see how payment works before you start. Nobody asks you to buy a kit or recruit a team.
What you can realistically expect
A clear niche and a real sample beat “I can do anything”. Plenty of new profiles earn little in the first month. Specialists with proof do better, and even they wait.
Who pays you
The client pays through Upwork and you withdraw to your bank. Do not start a brand-new client off-platform, and never send a client money for a deposit, a kit, or “equipment”.
How to start
- Create a profile only on the official Upwork website.
- Describe one service a stranger can understand in half a minute.
- Add a sample or a short account of work you have actually done.
- Send a few specific proposals. Ignore anyone selling a paid “Upwork system”.
Read this before you start
- Coaches sell ranking tricks. Upwork does not charge for a secret boost.
- A client who wants the whole project as a free sample, or who moves you to Telegram before a contract, is a usual time-waster.
- Proposal credits can cost money if you buy extras. You do not need a large pack to begin.
Sideline will not ask you for money. Anyone who messages you claiming we will is not us. Write to [email protected] if something on this page looks wrong.
