Language tutoring
Preply
Teach a language you actually speak, live, one to one. You set an hourly rate. Commission is higher while you are new and is described in the tutor agreement.

Checked 22 September 2026. Figures are ranges, not offers.
- Where
- From home, in countries the company actually pays. Eligibility is their rule, not ours — confirm payout before you count on the money. Students are worldwide. You need a quiet corner and a reliable connection.
- Hours
- Trial lessons are short and often discounted. Regular students then book a weekly slot. Evenings in the student’s time zone fill first.
- Pay
- Tutors set their own hourly rate; the commission comes off the top
- To start
- Free to create a tutor profile. Preply’s commission for new tutors is significant and steps down as you teach more hours. Read the current schedule before you copy someone else’s rate.
Why it is listed
You teach a language you know, on camera, and the payment path is on the site. No franchise fee.
What you can realistically expect
English, Spanish, and exam prep are crowded. A specific offer — conversation for nurses, or school French — is easier to find. The first month is for trials, not a full timetable.
Who pays you
Students pay Preply. You withdraw earnings. Do not invoice a trial student privately.
How to start
- Sign up as a tutor on preply.com.
- Write who the lessons are for, not just the language name.
- Record a short introduction you would be happy to send to a friend.
- Price trials honestly. A race to the bottom is optional.
Read this before you start
- Agencies that offer to “build your Preply profile” for a few hundred dollars are unnecessary.
- Students asking you to continue on WhatsApp after one trial are often avoiding the fee. You then have no protection if they do not pay.
- Do not advertise a qualification you do not hold.
Sideline will not ask you for money. Anyone who messages you claiming we will is not us. Write to [email protected] if something on this page looks wrong.
