Wyzant

Tutor academic subjects or test prep for US students. You set an hourly rate. Wyzant takes a commission and pays you for lessons that actually happen.

Where
United States. Lessons can be online or in person. Students search by subject and location, including large cities and suburbs.
Hours
Evenings and weekends are when students book. Two or three hours a week is a normal start. You are not on call unless you say so.
Pay
Tutors commonly set $25–60 an hour and keep about three quarters
To start
Free to apply. Wyzant’s commission has sat near 25% — tutors keep about 75%. Read the current tutor agreement. You do not buy students.

Why it is listed

Rates and the commission are visible, there is no stock to buy, and the work is teaching a subject you know.

What you can realistically expect

Maths, sciences, and exam prep fill faster than a general “homework help” headline. The first students may take a couple of weeks of a complete profile.

Who pays you

Families pay through Wyzant. You are paid for completed lessons. A family should never ask you to refund them outside the platform.

How to start

  1. Apply on wyzant.com, not through a recruiter.
  2. List the subjects you can teach without notes in your lap.
  3. Write a short bio about who you have helped, even if that is classmates or your own children.
  4. Set a rate you can say out loud. Raise it after you have reviews.

Read this before you start

  • Ignore ads for a paid Wyzant “approval kit”.
  • Do not share your personal payment apps with a new student to “save the fee”.
  • If you meet in person, choose a public place such as a library.
