Handmade and digital goods
Etsy
Sell things you make, or digital files you designed, to strangers. Etsy charges listing and transaction fees. A new shop is a shop, not a switch.

Checked 22 September 2026. Figures are ranges, not offers.
- Where
- You can pack parcels from home in any country Etsy pays. Digital files avoid postage. Local markets are a separate path, covered in the guides.
- Hours
- Making is the work. Listing and messages are extra. Evenings are realistic. Passive income is the wrong description until something actually sells twice.
- Pay
- Fees come off every sale. Many new handmade shops earn little until the photos and the reviews exist.
- To start
- Opening a shop is inexpensive compared with a course, but listing fees and transaction fees are real. Materials are yours. Do not buy a “done for you” Etsy store.
Why it is listed
You sell your own work on a marketplace people already use. We include it because the fee schedule is public — and we say the first month may be zero.
What you can realistically expect
Digital downloads can sell while you sleep, and they are also crowded. Handmade sells when the photos are clear and the postage is honest. Budget for fees and for returns.
Who pays you
Buyers pay Etsy. Etsy pays you, minus fees, to your bank. A buyer who wants to pay by wire for a “large order” before you have sold anything ordinary is a classic scam.
How to start
- Open a shop on etsy.com only.
- List five things you can make again, not one experiment.
- Photograph in daylight.
- Add fees and postage, then decide the price. If the number is embarrassing, the product is not ready.
Read this before you start
- Stores sold on Discord are either empty or full of other people’s designs.
- Print-on-demand is allowed, but the margin after fees is thin and the niches are full. It is not a loophole.
- Do not upload designs you do not own, including celebrity names and trademarked phrases.
Sideline will not ask you for money. Anyone who messages you claiming we will is not us. Write to [email protected] if something on this page looks wrong.
